On 1st August 1944 the Warsaw Uprising broke out. Repressed Polish at last had opportunity to free their capital from the Nazi occupation. Soon after first battles in left-bank Warsaw took place, German soldiers received Heinrich Himmler's order to raze the city to the ground and kill every Polish citizen. Germans used tanks, aircraft and heavy artillery against outnumbered and outgunned insurgents and civilians. The Polish were forced to travel by sewers. Western Allies tried to aid the National Army (it's the name of the most singificant Polish resistance movement) by air-dropping supplies and weaponry. However, only 30 % of the drops reached the insurgents. In August the Soviet Red Army reached right bank of the river Vistula and took control of the eastern part of Warsaw. It never helped the Polish. After 63 days of fight the insurgency collapsed. Several thousand soldiers were killed on both sides. The city was turned into rubble.

Jestem poruszona tą pracą. Dogłębnie. Przypomina mi o historii mojej rodziny jak też i o tym, że każdego roku wpinam biało-czerwoną wstążkę w klapę mojego żakietu... Jest bardzo ładnie dopracowany ten rysunek, jego koncept... po prostu... Ech... brak słów, wiesz? Fav, gdybym mogła - stukrotny...
