Bienfaiteur-class battleship by JanBoruta Bienfaiteur-class battleship by JanBoruta
Although the French built Le Petit Sol, they didn't engage in the Martian conflict after its colonisation, neither they forgot about the Navy. What is significant, they were the second nation, after the British, to succeed in space travel. The French have strong and modern space navy, consisting of few dozens of large battleships and an armada of lighter vessels.

The ship shown here, Audacieux, ("Daring") is one of the largest French battleships of Bienfaiteur-class. She may be considered ugly or bizarre, but she sports thick armour and maintains enourmous firepower. The armament (in basic version) consists of four torpedo launchers, three heavy gun turrets, seventeen medium single-gun turrets (twelve in side sponsons, five in the front part of the hull), four small-calibre gun turrets on the deck and seventeen flak turrets. However, the Audacieux has been modified and was fitted with a heavy turret armed with two heavy siege guns, basically designed for land forces for crushing thick walls of European fortresses. It is aided by a single flak turret. Such modification made the ship much slower, but it is now known for being invincible in combat (well, almost).

...

This is a concept made just for fun, and to supplement the space-steampunk universe of me and ~Kaiser-Conti.

Drawn today at school (about 2 hours) and refined at home (1 more hour). HB and 2B mechanical pencils.

Enjoy!
Tom :D

EDIT (12-06-2007): After receiving some critique I changed the prow of the ship and removed one of the turrets on the ventral side of the hull. I hope it looks much more decent now. :)

Because, in steampunk, there is no such thing as too many cannons. :P

Awesomeness. All of this steampunk is so great, I think the next story I write is going to be set in steampunk...

I love the 'traditional battleship in space' concept. It's the way battleships should look like. :)
