Gravelines by JanBoruta Gravelines by JanBoruta
Anno Domini 1588. The Great Spanish Armada is defeated and forced to flee around the British Isles, after the grand naval battle near Flemish harbour of Gravelines. In the drawing, the English fast galleon Golden Hind in skirmish against Spanish nad Portuguese heavy warships.

As usual, I used a gel pen on A4 paper. Texturized: [link] There will be a few more pieces in the series :D

Enjoy!
Tom :)

The real 'Golden Hind' is too short to have a mast of bonaventure (the fourth mast), but 'applause' for your work.

Well, Drake (and we are talking the Golden Hind here) was one of those with a letter of marque from Queen Elizabeth. So by the French and Spanish, he was among those called pirates, for sure. ;)

Great drawing, btw. =)

Mm, I'd discuss over that question - a usual pirate is an outlaw, and Drake was quite legal (for the English of course :lmao:). And we could presume that during the great battles with the Armada he was like a regular commander, at least he fought in the defence of his own country :)

Though Drake was hanged as a pirate. His privateer papers were supposedly found many years after his death, clearing him of all charges of which he was accused and for which he was executed.

THE MOAR U NO.

The piece is amazing, by the way. The detail you put into it is incredible, considering it's crosshatch. It's very true to the style of the time.

The line between pirate and privateer was not easy in the XVI century, some years before the Spanish Armada hanged hundreds of French and English privateers after the "Battle of Terceira", Spain and France were officially at pace so the privater papers were virtually invalid. The French kingdom was totally agree at that time (Better than a war).

Drake fought the Spanish most of his career when England and Spain were also at peace, so was in fact a pirate. What ever! Unfortunately he died of dysentery
