Gedanea is a mercantile duchy in the north of the continent of Hirseng Proper, which grew into importance a hundred and fifty years ago after gaining independence from the neighbouring Margravate of Stondor. A small city-state at first, Gedanea carved itself a small empire, thanks to brilliant military campaigns and ferocity of its tiny military. It took advantage of the weakened warlords of Noremachia to the north and captured the outlying marches of Cedarre to the east.
The Duchy was internationally recognized and currently is at peace with its neighbours. Thanks to the access to both sea and lakes deep inland, Gedanea prospers as a merchant state, excelling in banking, speculation and exports of valuable and durable metals.
Gedanean military was disbanded after signing the peace treaties, save for a 10.000-men-strong Ducal Guard, armed both with modern, breech-loading rifles and swords and sabres for personal defence. This elite corps is usually dressed in traditional Gedanean garb, though some soldiers prefer simple shakos and helmets instead of heavy hats.

This is a uniform concept for my own fantasy setting, in the world called Hirseng. The whole concept is based on mixing Merovingian, Carolingian, Romanesque and Byzantine architecture, fashion and mentality with a fair bit of clock- and steampunk, with World War I as the upper limit of real-world influences. I'm doing it just for fun and practice, though I don't rule out anything more serious.
