ROMA AETERNA by JanBoruta ROMA AETERNA by JanBoruta
Illustration for a short article dealing with the question of what if the Roman Empire existed a little bit longer than it did in reality. A great opportunity for a bit of mild steampunk. :D

This month's illustration for Polish fantasy zine Qfant, issue #15: [link]

2B mechanical pencil, A5 (cropped).

Lets just say if rome did at least 1/3 of the world would be unified and life would be so much more simpler, we would all have the same language there would hardly be any racisim as the countries and its people have lived together for centuries and religion wouldent slow the roman empire down in terms of accepting science or technology. they would be the most powerful empire that ever exiseted.

I wouldn't be so sure about this lack of racism or discrimination, I believe that Rome would go through periods of white supremacy policy, domination of one religion or other things as civil wars, national or tribal uprisings. Although I do believe that after sorting ouy those problems it would be easier for Rome to become a tolerant empire based on meritocracy. But this is just a what-if, history could be entirely different :)

There's an English-language RPG you might want to look up if this struck your fancy-it's about the Romans with gunpowder.

IIRC its title is something like "fistful of thunder."

Hmm, that should be interesting. I always imagine Romans with gunpowder whenever I play Civilization.

You should try Fallout : New Vegas, if you haven't yet. The game takes place in a post-nuclear world , around Las Vegas. The game is far better than you might expect from this simple overview. And it features roman legionnaries.

It was "fulgurus" or something of the like. I don't really remember, since I saw it...Six, seven years ago on the Wizards boards?

By the way, what words are written on the standard-bearers standarts? It doesn't look like S.P.Q.R.

Thanks for your great comment down below! ;) I wanted to come up with something original, but instead those are marked as "LEGIO I", "LEGIO II" and so on. The "SPQR" phrase was meant to be on the standards in the bottom left, but I didn't have time to tinker with it ;)

This is quite impressive! I love the amount of detail you've included in the man/general/don't know who he's supposed to be in the foreground, with the shine of the metal armor and the skin tones of his face distinguishable as far as working with pencils goes. As someone that has only recently gotten a taste of how shading works and all the tones come together to form a coherent image, I can see how this one might have been somewhat difficult yet fun to do! :D

Well yeah, me too. I've been playing lots of Empire, FOTS and Civilization 5 lately, but when Thera V4 is released, I will no doubt spend sleepless nights on it again.
