Redoutable's Last Stand by JanBoruta Redoutable's Last Stand by JanBoruta
With the invention of steam-powered antigravitational engines, warfare has reached a completely new level! Naval battles could lift themselves to the skies and resolve the eternal quarrels of warring nations... The Franco-Prussian War of 1870 above Alsace and Lorraine raged on, miles above fierce battles involving thousands of infantry soldiers...

The Redoutable, pride of Napoleon III's navy, was sent to prevent the Kaiserliche Luftmarine from it"s flight to Paris, after laying waste Metz and Strasbourg. However, it was destroyed in a skirmish against the Prussian behemoth, Friedrich der Grosse...

Hard to believe, I started it almost two years ago, in late 2008. I managed to finish it a month ago. HB and @B pencils on A4 paper.

Regards,
Tom :)

Great picture, although I find it somewhat unlikely that France's massive navy would lose to that of Germany. Large shipyards do not appear overnight, you know.

Hehe, airships are always so cool, aren't they? :D It's always a fun subject to draw. And I like how you did them, they have quite stylized, almost kind of quirky feel to them. The only thing I seem to miss a bit are some stronger values. The tones seem to be mostly in the mid-range.
But otherwise, nice work!

This is really really excellent work. I love your pencil strokes in the sky, and you can feel how heavy those bloody machines would be.

The humidity level around these things must be amazing lol. But that is really cool. Love the steampunk look on these classic WWI vessels.

They are even pre-WWI, as I based the designs here on French and German battleships of 1890's... :)

You really nailed the smoke and vapor here. Outstanding work.

Smoke and steam seem to be the most difficult for me, still... I have much less problems with things like the ship's hulls, guns, characters...

Mnie też ich brakowało, ale zbyt dużo czasu minęło zanim udało mi się zebrać i zacząć robić cokolwiek... :P Może teraz nie odpadnę w szrankach :)

Apparently, this one is the oldest, began in 2008 I did about 50% of it then, and the latter half in April 2010, when I some of the ways I draw in have changed a little bit... Thank you for commenting :)

Wow man, greate picture, i really loved the concept you created there, the flying ships... this reminds my of an anime named "Last Exile" that has the same ideia.

Good work by the way, for this one and the others you posted, keep showing us these great pictures \o/

I've never seen this anime, but I'm aware of its existence. I think that the concept of flying battleships isn't really much original or exclusive, but amusing enough to follow it :)

Great design!
I like the bulky look of the hull.

I just can't find rudder (I imagine that in case of machines like that rudder should be either very big or placed right after propellers to allow manoeuvring at low speeds)

Still, definitely :+fav: !

Actually, there is a whole bunch of rudders with the most inmportant just under the name "Redoutable", the second below the keel and numerous smaller ones on the sides, etc... I know they aren't prominent enough, but otherwise, they would spoil the ship's looks, at least in my opinion... Thanks for kind words! :)

To może być prawda z tym zakłóceniem wyglądu...

Niestety często poprawne wielkości (z punktu widzenia inżyniera) elementów zakłócają wygląd.

Dlatego wszystkie moje projekty wyglądają kiepsko...
